A healthier working environment increases cognitive capacity by 101%
β
Working on a healthy environment will not only improve your mood and boost your productivity, but also your cognitive capacity.
Do you ever feel sick at the office, like in a lack of oxygen or get a headache and you canβt concentrate? This may be related to bad air quality inside your office. In fact, CO2 and VOCsβ high concentration level affect the way we think and can reduce our working performance.
Many studies have already proved bad air quality can badly affect sleep, concentration, and health. Harvard went a step forward and run some interesting tests.
The research
Scientists from Harvard University, The State University of New York and Syracuse University created an experiment designed to quantify the impact on the cognitive operation of a polluted working environment. They set up three concentrations:
- Conventional, with High-VOCs and low ventilation (the conventional one, based on the average of the results are found in the working
- Green, Low-VOCs, low ventilation (in green buildings).
- Green+ Low-VOC + higher ventilation.
Twenty-four professionals were measured during higher-order decision-making with the Strategic Management Simulation (SMS). The three parameters they used were ventilation, CO2 and VOCs.
The results
Cognitive scores in Green and Green+ environments were 61% and 101% higher than in the conventional setting. Even more surprising are the results of two of the sub-sections, information usage section and strategy section yield up to 180% (Green) and 300% (Green+) than the conventional condition.
